As Deputy Director General, you will be part of the Directorate General Statistics (DG/S) which is currently undergoing a reorganisation with the aim of enhancing its capacity to provide high-quality statistics through further development of its service orientation, new (especially granular) data provisions, a stronger focus on data integration and an increase in the efficiency of data production. As Deputy Director General, you will:
  • coordinate three divisions of DG/S: the Monetary and Economic Statistics, the External Statistics and Sector Accounts Division and the Statistical Applications and Tools Division;
  • lead the business area together with the Directorate General and the other Deputy, including managing staff, defining overall strategy, workforce planning, allocating resources and establishing work programmes, and regularly reviewing the progress of work;
  • oversee the preparation of (i) statistical dossiers for the ESCB Statistics Committee, Executive Board and Governing Council, and (ii) projects aimed at improving the efficiency and effectiveness of the production of statistics;
  • contribute, as a member of the ECB's senior management, to the development of the strategic direction of the ECB;
  • foster a collaborative working atmosphere and an engaged, commitment and healthy workforce;
  • represent the Directorate General and the ECB by participating in and/or chairing internal and external committees, working groups, project steering groups and high-level fora, and maintaining working contacts with statistical institutions world-wide.

Fixed-term contract which may be converted into a permanent one after five years subject to individual performance and organisational needs. Leadership competencies will be assessed both during an interview day at the ECB and in an assessment with an external provider at their offices in Frankfurt.
You will bring to the role:
  • a master's or higher degree in statistics, economics, finance, business administration, mathematics, computer science, engineering or other relevant field, or a bachelor's degree in one of these fields combined with four years of relevant professional experience in these areas;
  • ideally, more than five years of relevant professional experience (in case of bachelor in addition to the above requested four years) with the production or analysis of economic statistics. Experience with monetary and financial and/or external statistics would be considered an asset;
  • ideally more than five years of experience in leading and managing highly qualified managers and staff from diverse backgrounds in the public or private sector;
  • knowledge and/or experience of developing international statistical standards would be considered an asset;
  • a track record of publications in the domain of central bank statistics would be considered an asset;
  • proficient presentation skills and proven ability to efficiently chair meetings involving participants from different countries and organisations;
  • an advanced command of English with proven drafting ability;
  • an intermediate command of at least one other official language of the EU.
